Shingles, or herpes zoster, is caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox, characterized by a painful rash and nerve pain. The shingles vaccine is recommended for most adults over 50 years old, even if they've had shingles before or have received the older shingles vaccine (Zostavax). It is even more important to get the vaccine if a person previously had chickenpox as the same virus reactivates later in life as shingles.
