How effective is the HPV Vaccine?

HPV vaccine is very effective and is estimated to have over 90% efficacy in preventing different HPV types infections that lead to different types of cancer and warts. For adults, the vaccine is provided as a series of three doses given on 0,2 and 6 months time intervals.

Who Should Get the Gardasil Vaccine?

BC Centre for Disease Control ( BCCDC ) recommends the Gardasil vaccine for:

• Preteens: Both boys and girls in grade 6 to 12 are provided with the vaccine as part of their routine childhood vaccinations in B.C.
• Teens and Young Adults: Catch-up vaccination is recommended for males and females up to age 26 if they were not vaccinated earlier.
• Adults: Some adults aged 27-45 who were not adequately vaccinated might also benefit from the vaccine.

Who Should not receive the HPV vaccine:

Those with a history of an anaphylactic reaction to a previous dose of any HPV vaccine or to any component of the vaccine, Gardasil®9.

What Are the Side Effects of the Vaccine:

The vaccine is generally well-tolerated. The common adverse reactions include local pain, redness, swelling at the site of the injection. Other common side effects include mild fever and headache.

Conditions Caused by HPV

HPV can lead to several health problems, including:

• Cervical Cancer: HPV is the primary cause of cervical cancer in women. Regular screening and vaccination are crucial in preventing this life-threatening disease.

• Other Cancers: HPV can also cause cancers of the vulva, vagina, penis, anus, and oropharynx (throat, including the base of the tongue and tonsils).

• Genital Warts: Certain strains of HPV cause genital warts, which are non-cancerous growths on the skin of the genital and anal areas.

• Oral HPV Infections: HPV can infect the mouth and throat, potentially leading to oropharyngeal cancers. These infections are often linked to sexual activity and can affect individuals of all ages.
